n Unit 4, you learned about power and privilege through the creative expression of music. You also examined various types of oppression, target groups and non-target groups, and invisible/unearned benefits.

For this assignment, select one of songs provided in the Unit 4 resources list labeled as “Hound Dog” and 10 Covers by White Artists of Black Musicians’ Songs and identify what messages of power and privilege that you observe. Address the following in your paper:

  • Describe the song. State the title of the song. Who is the artist(s)? What is the song about?
  • What are the messages the song is trying to express?
    • How is it tied to the cultural background, worldview, experiences, and/or beliefs of the artist(s)?
    • Discuss how this song has made an impact on others and society.
      • Explain how the message connects to either oppression or power and privilege.

Your paper must be supported by two scholarly, credible, or peer-reviewed sources. These sources can be from peer-reviewed journals or from trusted government or university sites.

Your paper must be two to three double-spaced pages in length and include

  • A title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date
  • An introduction and a conclusion paragraph.
  • A separate references page. You must use at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed, or credible sources. It is important that the paper is in proper APA format. Refer to the General APA Guidelines from Purdue Owl for more information.
